Sip #174

How is Your Timing?

Timing is everything in growing grapes and making wine: picking grapes at their peak, at times, praying that the rain holds off. The art in winemaking is in the winemaker’s timing: tending the vines, in challenging conditions, how long to keep it in the barrels, and then storage in the bottles, before release.

The lesson of the vineyard is to heed nuances of timing in all facets of life.  You start with a preference for something to happen, at a particular time, in a particular way, and then life happens. How do you adjust to a different outcome? What happens if what you wanted to happen 2 years ago is finally happening…now?

Almost 2 years ago, Liz Thach and I sat down to create Sippin’ on Top of the World, by choosing selections from over 160 Sips that had been sent out over the years by email.  We figured it would take a few months if we self-published.

While sorting through feelings of disappointment that it took 2 years, I had an Aha! Waiting that long resulted in 2 gifts which, I believe, bodes well for the book.  Coming out now, Sippin’ participates in the energy people are looking for in the new president: enlisting us all to see situations and possibilities differently in seeking ways to want to get involved. That is Sippin’s premise: to engage ideas that raise questions to help sort out values and priorities with a  bias toward generating finding more blessings in the day than you might otherwise have time to notice.

The other blessing in Sippin’ coming out so long after we had imagined is that the lengthier process involved many more people sharing input on how to enhance the book.  The group effort has resulted in this being the right time for Sippin’ Time to begin!

 REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR SIPPIN’:

1. How often do you notice timing and or missed opportunities?

2. What is your story of something happening, but not when expected?

3. What strategies do you have for adapting when timing is thrown off?

4.                                                                                   (Raise your own question… as you are invited to do in Sippin’ on Top of the World)
